BirdLife Australia Seabird Survey — Green Heroes
Green Heroes volunteers aboard the research vessel at Cook Island

Get involved

Do something about it

For people who would rather be out there than read about it. There is a way in whatever your age, fitness or experience.

Where to start

Almost everything we know about this reserve was recorded by a volunteer.

Green Heroes is a volunteer organisation. The monthly surveys, the species records, the code of conduct signed by every operator on the reserve, the films used in classrooms — all of it came from people who decided to turn up.

You do not need to be a diver, a scientist, or particularly fit. Some of the most useful work happens on the shore, behind a camera, or at a laptop.

Six ways to get involved

Pick whichever suits where you are. Most people start with one and end up doing three.

Our core group of regulars who turn out month after month. This is where the long-term data comes from, and where most people end up if they keep showing up.

Citizen science projects

Record what you see and add it to the picture. Photos from your own dives and walks feed the Cook Island and Fingal Head projects, and you do not need to know what anything is called.
